another day older and deeper in debt
Sep. 8th, 2012 04:06 amWho: The Militia, and the citizens of Baedal.
What: Moments in time.
Where: All around the city.
When: Over the course of this week.
Notes: This post is the activity mentioned here - there were enough volunteers to do asides tailored to specific volunteer characters, but if you'd like to have your character witness something in here, or hear about something after the fact and react to it, you are more than free to. Just keep in mind that these are for read-and-react, not confrontations: if your character picks a fight they will be arrested. These are examples of normal events that happen every day in Baedal.
Warnings: Bigotry, xenophobia, harassment, references to police brutality, endless creepy patronizing bullshit.
Day in and day out, the Militia has a presence in Baedal. Many are plain-clothed officers, watching, waiting. In times of strife, more and more uniformed agents appear amongst the citizens, reminding Baedal that she is protected. (That she is ruled.) For most, this is simply the way things are, and always have been – if you follow the rules, and if you shun those who don't, your life is unaffected. Maybe you decide not to vote because your heart doesn't match up to what's expected of you. Maybe you keep your eyes on your feet and keep walking past a hooded authority figure matched against a defenseless civilian. Maybe you are saved, and your ardor is won forever.
It's different for everyone.
Who: Wolfgang, Benji, later Benny
What: Wolfgang goes off his meds, has a major psychotic break, and then tries to pretend nothing happened.
Where: Nawiedzonydom, Badside; later, Madrasati
When: Some nebulous point after the Spatters raid/riots?
Warnings: Drug use, body horror, self-injury, mental illness, psychiatric abuse of children.
wonder if he'll ever know
Aug. 1st, 2012 12:01 pmWho: Benji Ryans (and later, Wolfgang Einhorn)
What: Just a little law and order.
Where: The Spatters
When: All of 31st.
Note: During the raid, there is a halt on all communications going in and out of the Spatters -- no media is leaked, and the reception for CiD is just flat out poor. In the aftermath, there's a blackout of information.
Warnings: References to police brutality.
Who: Shrieky and Benji
What: Look! Look! It's a demonically tainted nightmare!
Where: In Wolfgang's Haus of frands
When: Pre-Fairytale plot
Notes: nope!
Warnings: Nightmares, demons, and flies. Possibly some body horror, because Shrieky has issues.
Shrieky slept naked, which could have made this a little awkward in different circumstances. His bedroom had originally had two beds in it, but he's pushed them together into one super bed, so that Benji can sit up in it reading while he waits to go to sleep.
Shrieky, for his own part, has pulled the blanket that he stole from Yahlii - his missing and presumed dead former housemate - up and around himself, so that his arms and legs are wrapped in a loose cocoon of fabric. Normally, he'd sleep more casually, with his limbs sticking out at awkward angles from beneath the quilt. He's making allowances though, to try and preserve Benji's precious eyes from having to see his junk. Again.
He shifts, slightly, watching her through heavily lidded eyes.
"So, once I'm gone, you'll be able to follow me in? You'll find me quickly, won't you?"
He knows the answers already, she's been more than thorough in her explanations. By now he's just talking to delay the encroaching tide of sleep that's poised to overcome him.

Strange events tend to go unnoticed in Baedal, compared to the much stranger things happening around them. People don't tend to be noticed when they go missing, either. The city takes these things in stride. After all, people get called back to their homeworld all the time, or they die. Everyone knows this.
Still, rumors start cropping up around the city about the sudden appearance of twelve identical towers positioned around the city like the face of a clock...

Where: Nawiedzonydom, Badside

Warnings: None yet!
The house is a fairly large property and while it looks a bit frightening on the outside — Wolfgang never seems to get around to fixing that much, he always has a million other more pressing projects to distract him — it's turning out quite nicely. He's filled it with proper furniture, a working kitchen, even decorations, a lot of local art, some "donated" by his weirdo artsy friends. The yard is coming back to life from the long neglect it's suffered from before, but slowly, like it's shy.
There's a fence around the backyard now, high enough to keep the pets from jumping over. There's a rumour around town that the house is haunted, but that's probably because most of the people who live in it are a little eccentric.

What: The city is rebuilding itself, and as does everyone else. Benji about town.
Where: Various places!

There is a morning where she brings her violin with her. The case gets laid out on the street, and her first attempt at playing levels off into obscurity; that no one wants to listen to mediocre musicianship for long at least saves her from the agony of completing the piece. She never necessarily performs; she sits on the stone steps of some building that's being advertised for lease, lanky legs together and aside, ankles crossed, a demure shape in black and grey and an aura of unkemptness that speaks more of habit than it does being windswept and interesting. She thinks of Victorian literature with unusually talented orphans busking for bread, and remembers her cousin playing the piano with her to an audience of three to five, cigarette smoke in the air and then slightly condescending applause, and quietly attempts to play again.
She won't earn much even then, but at least this time, the music winds complete over the cobble stones, mewling out its stilted melody.
Her errands take her to different reaches of the city. She has an allowance for cab fare and train rides, but likes to walk; it's a good way to get to know the city, even if it means setting aside a couple of hours for slower travel. Since signing up with the Personification Initiative, she's been able to earn wages for the first time in her life. Frivolous forays into playing music on the street corners have been exactly that: frivolous. She teaches literacy to adults, those who arrive in Baedal without the necessary skills to survive. She hears about the Spatters, as well, and the House that offers similar services, and occasionally winds up walking those streets, attempting to avoid the ones where it seems like the Fog is thicker than usual.
Food is bought in outdoor markets in early mornings, contributing a little to what she takes from Njoki's pantry. Sometimes she will even sit down somewhere and buy some tea and a muffin and feel incredibly indulgent for it. Clothing is primarily bought from second hand places, judged by its practicality and comfort and whatever aesthetics she's feeling that day. Books are usually borrowed from the Library, dependent on their availability, and usually not for herself, but those she tries to teach. She is not an expert, but knows that people will only do things if they want to do things, and she selects nonfictions of vivid interest, slim short story compilations, things she thinks those she tutors would find interesting.
At night, she sleeps. Sometimes she dreams.
But all the reasons I gave...

A city as diverse as Baedal provides a glut of strange medical practitioners and without much to base his opinions on, Sebastian is forced to scan the local papers, trade on word of mouth, and spend a fair portion of his spare time calling on various practices. Once he'd put out a quiet word at work, the staff at Hellsing have been quite helpful in suggesting magically-inclined doctors, healers, shamans, and a few truly alien specialists that left him confused but pleased by the thought of progress. Admittedly, there had been a good deal more walking and interviewing than actual headway, but a little
One consultation led to another, which lead to contacting a small apothecary that was known for poor bedside manner and efficiently dealing with odd problems. After sending off a brief description of himself and his problem, Sebastian consoled himself that no matter how suspect the apothecary, he had the luxury of time and choice -- no more stitches by veterinarians or hasty and ill-brewed healing by untrained students. Still, as he reads a book in 'waiting room', there's a touch of same atmosphere and he's not sure if it's worrying or comforting.

Nov. 4th, 2011 08:09 pmWho: Lucius Malfoy (Sr) and Severus Snape α
What: Creepers will creep.
Where: Somewhere in Badside.
When: Now. Sundown.
Rain clings to steel and shakes off in earnest by the time heavy footsteps are coming down the zigzagged fire-escape-turned-main entranceway.
The sky has deigned not to open up its downpour for the moment, but the smell of water and ozone hangs in the cooling air and the sky remains angrily clouded. Lucius' coat is damp from earlier in the day, a black garment of too fine a make for this end of town, almost snagging on the grimy stairs as he descends, shoes finding asphalt, as does the end of his cane. He arrived with nothing and leaves with nothing, thus making whatever business he had inside the red-brick apartment complex somewhat mysterious, but wherever he is going to next, he is clearly in no rush.
He walks. Eventually, there will be somewhere interesting he can slither into. A bar. A bookstore. A quiet restaurant. A brothel. (No.)

Oct. 2nd, 2011 11:53 pmWho: Claire Bennet & Severus Snape
What: Testing the waters for Martel
Where: Apothecary de Snape
When: Pre-Lex's Party
Warnings: Snapeishness
( It doesn't take her nearly as long as it should to locate Snape's shop, not with the way she's been snooping around whenever she thinks she's least likely to be noticed, skulking in the shadows like some sort of painfully nonthreatening stray cat. Regardless of his previous attitude toward her, it isn't like Claire to just give up on people even when they give her a handful of reasons and try to shove them down her throat. She's pushy, and she knows that, but it's only ever gotten her places before and she hopes that, despite that previous encounter, this will be no different. )
