Strange events tend to go unnoticed in Baedal, compared to the much stranger things happening around them. People don't tend to be noticed when they go missing, either. The city takes these things in stride. After all, people get called back to their homeworld all the time, or they die. Everyone knows this.

Still, rumors start cropping up around the city about the sudden appearance of twelve identical towers positioned around the city like the face of a clock...

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST.

You are at market when you are approached by a slightly terrified-looking middle-aged man who tries to sell you a rose. He looks so pathetic and the rose is so cheap - only a shekel - that not agreeing would be cruel. You immediately prick your finger and fall into a deep sleep. When you awaken, you are at the top of a tower in Chnum, which appears larger on the inside than the out. Inside, it appears to be a labyrinthine estate with an unending number of corridors and rooms. Anyone can enter the tower, but they will never make their way to the top without becoming hopelessly lost.

Worse - you are not alone. There's something else here with you, and you can't see it, but you know it's huge, and hungry, and bestial, and it's chasing you. Run or hide? Either way, it's always there, just out of the corner of your eye.

There's an old woman pacing outside of the tower. When she sees you, she looks relieved. "Oh, you've come!" she exclaims, taking you by the arm. She knows who did this, you see, and yes, your friend is trapped at the top of this tower, but you'll never find him on your own. Anyone who enters this tower will become hopelessly lost, and die.

She tells you what you need to enter the tower: a magic looking-glass. It's hers. Unfortunately it's been stolen from her by the same man responsible for these abductions, so you'll have to go fetch it. She's not sure where he's taken it, but she thinks it's somewhere along the Gross Tar. You'll know it when you find it, she tells you, because it's being guarded by a monstrous beast. Off you go, then, dear. You'd better hurry. Your friend in the tower is not alone.

In a bar or a club, you are approached by a handsome stranger who is charming, dashing, and exactly your type. Also, rich. He takes you dancing. you're drinking, dancing, having a good time - you start to lose track of time. At midnight, the bar/club/etc and everything in it vanishes and you find that you are locked in a tower in Badside, which is filthy; you are compelled to spend every moment cleaning it, but it never seems to get any cleaner. You cannot sleep or rest; you have to clean. Worse, you have to do it in glass slippers which you cannot remove.

There's an old woman pacing outside of the tower. When she sees you, she looks relieved. "Oh, you've come!" she exclaims, taking you by the arm. She knows who did this, you see, and yes, your friend - oh, did you not know...? Well, anyway, a woman is trapped at the top of this tower. You need seven keys to make it to the top of the tower, which she can make for you, but first you must collect the following items: a white pumpkin from the patch in Stoneshell; four mice; two rats; and a snake. What's are they for? Well...

Well, you'll see when you bring it. Just hurry, please; she's running out of time. You'll be rewarded if you do.

DIAMONDS AND TOADS.

You are approached by a feeble old man who requests for you to get him a drink from a nearby well. Should you comply, he smiles benevolently at you, thanks you for your kindness, and says he will give you a gift: every time you speak, diamonds and roses will fall from your mouth. (If you refuse, he curses you: snakes and toads will fall from your mouth whenever you speak.) Either way, while you're choking on them, he takes you to a tower in the Spatters.

There's an old woman pacing outside the tower. When she sees you, she looks relieved. "Oh, you came, you came!" she exclaims, and explains to you that the person you're looking for is indeed at the top of the tower, but they've been cursed and need your help.

You need to find a golden coin which belongs to a fairy queen in Barrackham. But she won't give it up for nothing, the woman warns you; you'll have to trade something of value of your own... And you'd better hurry, dear. You friend is running out of time.

FITCHER'S BIRD.

A handsome young man approaches you at your forge, requesting a bit of work to be done. he has a helmet that needs some repair. It's shaped like a bird's skull and covered in jewels and feathers, and he offers you a lot of money for the job. When you reach out to take it, it leaps from his hand and fixes itself permanently to your face; you cannot remove it, no matter how much you struggle. He takes you to a tower in Abrogate Green, around which is a festive party attended by people who do not notice anyone else is there and will not respond or react in any way.

There's an old woman slightly apart from the festivity outside the tower. She's the only one who will speak to you. She can help you enter the tower, she says; she knows who did this and his magic is more powerful than hers, but she knows how to get around it.

Here is what you must do:

There are two chests somewhere in this city. They contain the bodies of the last two abducted people the wizard tried this with. You will need to find those chests, open them, and reassemble the bodies; they will tell you where to find the keys to the tower. After that, you must somehow find a way to exit the tower without any of the people outside noticing, because they will stop you if they do - by killing you just like the last two...

You must hurry; we're all running out of time.

FROG PRINCESS.

You are going about your day when you are struck by an arrow loosed out of nowhere. You fall over and find your body slowly transforming into that of an enormous frog-like monster. Soon enough an old man comes by, grabs you up, and takes you to a tower in Ketch Heath, which is guarded by a monster that can only be defeated by pricking it with a certain golden needle...

After sunset, there's an old woman pacing outside the tower. How did you get here? Chance, maybe, fate, destiny, whatever you want to call it. Either way, she looks relieved by your presence. She rushes at you, entreating your help. There's someone trapped in the top of this tower, and if they aren't rescued, something bad will happen to this city - very bad. Catastrophically bad. We all may die.

Plus, if you do this for her, she promises you a hefty reward.

The monster outside the tower - which won't approach as long as she is here, but once she leaves, it will attack you - can only be defeated with a certain golden needle. It belongs to her. Unfortunately it's been stolen from her, placed inside an egg inside a hare inside an oak tree somewhere in the woods of this city. You'll need to find that tree and extract the needle to enter the tower. And you must hurry; you're running out of time...

THE LITTLE MERMAID.

You are approached by a beautiful figure in the river. It's a mermaid. It wants you to join it. when you do, it grabs you, plunges into the water, and jams an iron dagger in your heart, which causes you to fall into a deep sleep that resembles death. It takes you to a tower in Raven's Gate, which is filled floor to ceiling with water. How long until you drown?

There's an old woman pacing outside the tower. When she sees you, she looks relieved. "You've come!" she exclaims as she approaches you. She explains the person you're looking for is here, locked at the top of this tower, and you must hurry. Before they drown.

The key is located somewhere in the ocean. She doesn't know where, but she knows who can tell you: the sea-witch who lives off the coast of Gallmarch. But you'll have to be prepared to give up something for this knowledge, because the sea-witch gives nothing away for free.

You are approached by a desperate young man who asks you to climb a fence and pick a bit of cabbage for him, for you see, his wife... anyway, his sob story is boring; should you acquiesce, as soon as your fingers touch the plant, it wraps itself around you and pulls you into the ground. You awaken in a tower in Flag Hill, and discover that your hair has doubled in length. In fact, it's growing fast enough for you to see. In fact, within an hour, it's down to your feet. And it's still growing. It won't stop until it's started filling the room, tangling you in it, to the point where you're not actually sure whether you can drown in your own hair...

When you attempt to do so, you prick your finger on it and a splinter lodges itself under your nail. You immediately fall down into a sleep that resembles death. He takes you to a tower in Barrackham, which is covered in thorny rosebushes made of cold iron.

At the market, you come across a lonely stall operated by a sad, tired old man. He encourages you to sample any one of his wares: a beautiful golden comb, a gorgeous embroidered corset, or a pretty velvet ribbon choker. Whichever one you choose is poisoned. As soon as you put it on, you will fall down immediately into a sleep that resembles death. While thus asleep, he takes you to a tower in Serpolet, where you reside in a glass coffin surrounded by red roses. The tower is guarded by a massive huntsman, ten feet tall and wielding an axe, who will not let anyone inside until they pay the toll...

SWAN PRINCESS.
