Strange events tend to go unnoticed in Baedal, compared to the much stranger things happening around them. People don't tend to be noticed when they go missing, either. The city takes these things in stride. After all, people get called back to their homeworld all the time, or they die. Everyone knows this.

Still, rumors start cropping up around the city about the sudden appearance of twelve identical towers positioned around the city like the face of a clock...

People, generally speaking, don't actually disappear into thin air, regardless of how that seems to be the case. Except in Baedal, where such things do occur, as Kalinda Sharma's discovered in more than one occasion. It makes it much harder to track a person down...

But not impossible. The city's only so big, after all, and the sudden appearance of tall towers throughout is conspicuous enough to begin investigating after it's become apparent that Don Draper isn't simply avoiding her. He may be the type, but he'd at least do them both the courtesy of pretending he has more pressing things on his agenda.

Kalinda isn't actually surprised when she's greeting upon her arrival as though the old woman had been expecting her. The question of where is he is answered in precisely the way she hoped it wouldn't be, her dark eyes scanning the structure from foundation to sky-reaching tower. Of course. This is the sort of junk she used to read about in books when she was barely taller than the top of her boots. She supposes Baedal is just absurd enough that it was only a matter of time before she would be sent on some sort of quest. It helps her to rationalise it this way at any rate.

Finding a fairy queen in Barrackham isn't as simple as it sounds. (Does it actually sound simple?) When it comes time to trade, Kalinda doesn't hesitate to give up something she truly values. What is a sentimental attachment when compared to someone's life? She would argue it's just one sentimental attachment exchanged for another, if she were feeling particularly cynical. With coin in hand - held tightly enough that it's left an indent in her palm - she returns to the tower, breathless from running.

An appropriate measure of sympathy, if she only knew.
