It's like paradise, spread out with a butter knife :: [OPEN]

Who: EVERYONE
What: Réjean has decided that more people ought to celebrate and help raise a bit of dosh for one of his favourite bars. See: flyer.
Where: The Apache.
When: Misdi night and into the wee hours of the morning.
Warnings: Discussion of Pickman's manky feet.

The Apache is much the same as it always is: dimly lit, with the jukebox playing in the background, and the bartender serving whatever's on tap. Tonight, the bar is packed with people from all across the city, different cantons and cohorts, all out to celebrate surviving the fungal plague. Patrons are encouraged to buy tickets for a door prize with the proceeds going to repair the damage tunnelling ants made to the cellar.

Jack's not much for drinking other than socially these days. He likes to stay on top of his game, and it's just not the same if he can't get drunk anyway. This place is kind of cute, with the jukebox and the southwestern style of things. Jack's hanging around looking at the wall of heroes in curiosity, wondering what exactly each person's story is and how it applies to the bar in general.

He's looking about as non-casual as ever in his customary braces and button-down under his RAF greatcoat, but fitting in's never really been his style. And besides, there's no use fitting in in a party setting, right? At least the greatcoat will get him noticed. Easy to spot a man like him, after all.

After parting ways so that Pickman can go show off his new hooves to some pretty lady he's (inexplicably) managed to impress, Njoki makes her way through the crowd and up to the bar where she orders a bottle of whatever's good and bitter.

Jack might notice that Njoki is dressed casually and moves through the crowd with confidence as she wanders over to have a look at the wall of heroes.

Jack turns as he feels someone's presence joining him, and is pleased to see that it is Njoki, a familiar face. He smiles widely at her.

"You know, we're going to have to meet in a non-party setting sometime. I might start to think that you only come out for parties. Or maybe that's me. Who knows anymore," he says, with a shake of his hand. "Nice to see you again, though?"

"What can I say? I'm a busy woman." Njoki grins and nods in greeting. Now, if only they could get Sol to join them, they'd have all the terrifying teeth in the Apache over in one place.

"Likewise. Good to see you got out okay."

Jack nods. "Yep. That I did. You too, for that matter."

He cocks his head to the side. "What did you end up doing in the latest craziness that this city has thrown at us, then? Seems like everyone I speak to was sent off on another mission or other."

[identity profile] aldabeyoun.livejournal.com 2011-08-11 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
Njoki shrugs off his question. "Nothing much. I got called up to go help out, but I'm not much use for stuff like that. You?"

She went along on the mission to find the lantern, but her skills are better served through preparation and not action. While she can fight in a melee relatively well, she's not about to shift in front of strangers.

Jack shrugs himself. "I stayed behind, tried to help out with the people that got infected by the spores. Round them up in the Arena and all. People weren't exactly cooperative, but. We did what we could. And it all worked out in the end, right? S'why we're having this party in the first place."

He turns to her, taking her image in for a moment, noticing the scars on her arms. "...now those are impressive," he says, motioning towards them.

"Thanks. They took a bit of work." Njoki is both pleased and proud of her scarification. It took months to finish and it's an extensive piece of work. "You have any mod work done?"

Jack shakes his head. "Nope. I was in the Agency, and then...well." He smiles secretly. "Guess I've just lost the opportunity by now."

[identity profile] aldabeyoun.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
"Uh-huh." Agency? Njoki doesn't know what he's talking about or why he's being coy. It's a bit off-putting, but she shrugs it off and continues dryly, "You can always get a temp tattoo."

Jack looks to her, surprised at the suggestion, before smiling. "You're right. I could. ...I don't know what of, though. It's been a long time since getting a real one was even possible."

[identity profile] aldabeyoun.livejournal.com 2011-08-14 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
"Why wouldn't 'getting a real one' not be possible for you?" She recognizes the coat as some sort of military cut, but doesn't understand why it's not an option for him.

Jack shrugs mysteriously. "Let's just say that I'm kind of stuck in a rut that I'll probably never get a chance to break." He turns to her with a smile. "It looks good on you, though. Must've been quite a process."

[identity profile] aldabeyoun.livejournal.com 2011-08-14 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
"Let's just say," she parrots back at him with a faintly incredulous expression. "You've got to be shitting me. Does the whole international man of vaguely-hinted-at-mystery actually work?"

Njoki is often straightforward to the point of bluntness. If someone has a secret, then they ought to keep it, not drop hints with a wink and a smile.

"Usually," Jack says, with a smile and a shrug. "People keep on guessing, wanting more, I get to buy them a drink, and y'know. Things go on from there. Speaking of..." he says, turning to her. "D'you want anything? We are at a bar, after all." He adds, after a moment, "It'd be my treat."

[identity profile] aldabeyoun.livejournal.com 2011-08-15 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
"No, I'm good for now, but thanks." While Njoki might've been heading towards the bar, she's experienced enough not to accept a drink in the middle of this conversation. It's a gentler rebuff than saying she does want something and will pay for her own, please and thank you.

"I guess I'm just a bit too dull for that sort of guessing game."

[personal profile] 51stcentury 2011-08-15 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Jack shrugs. "Not dull, no." He can tell that being a little mysterious got them on the wrong foot a little, and he wants to make up for that. She's one of the few acquaintances he's made in the city, and he'd rather get to know her better, not push her away.

"I...kind of heal really fast," he explains. "Restore to factory defaults, I guess you could say. It means that things like scars and tattoos don't stick." He shrugs again.
