The Apache is much the same as it always is: dimly lit, with the jukebox playing in the background, and the bartender serving whatever's on tap.

Shepard shook his hand - a bit awkward, given she was right-handed, but she managed. "My name's Shepard, commanding officer of the SSV Normandy, not that that means anything to anyone here. Nice to meet you." She didn't even bat an eyelash at his admission to being a teetotaler. It takes all kinds, after all.

She shot Garrus a somewhat-amused look, then turned back to Hellboy. "And this is Garrus. He's served under me for the past couple of years." In a manner of speaking. Ahem.

The Normandy doesn't mean anything to Hellboy either, aside from any possible historical references in picking the name, but that Garrus is obviously an alien makes it unsurprising that there's a spaceship involved.

"It's nice to meet you both. And I'm... actually from Earth." The bartender brings his drink, and after paying for it and picking it up, he shifty-eyes and elaborates a little. "Well, mostly. More or less. You can probably make some guesses from the name. It's a long story."

Only a very little elaboration, then, as he hates using the d-word or anything directly relating to Hell in reference to himself.

He glanced aside at Shepard, mandible twitching in that smirk again. Oh, he'd caught the double meaning of her statement there indeed. Cute.

But Hellboy was speaking again, and Garrus looked back to him, that incessant finger tapping finally ceasing as he relaxed somewhat. 'Some guesses' was right, his knowledge of the things he'd picked up from being around humans enough to at least give him a vague idea of how he'd earned the name.

"It's significant seeing so many from Earth. And yet not the same Earth. Apparently all things have an interest in where your species comes from, Shepard.."

Shepard could make a few guesses all right, and all of them had to do with human mythology.

There were still some humans in her universe who bought into the idea of God, of Heaven and Hell, that sort of thing. But they were a small minority. She did kind of wonder what he considered himself, if he believed he came from Hell - a demon of some kind?

But it was pretty clear he wasn't comfortable talking about it, so she let it slide.

"Or at least, the exceptional ones from Earth," she pointed out dryly to Garrus' comment. "It's weird, seeing so many humans in one place that's not on Earth." Even in the Alliance, serving on Alliance vessels, there was always the awareness that humanity was the new kid on the block, that there were dozens of other species who'd been active in galactic politics for far longer, and who had far more influence and power.

In Baedal, it seemed, the reverse was somewhat true.

Those guesses would pretty much be right, as odd as that may seem to space-future people like Shepard and Garrus. (Imagine how they'd take it if someone told them what his sword was and how he got it.)

"There are some universes that apparently don't have an Earth, but still have humans who just have other names for their homeworlds. There are some I guess like yours, with spaceships and humans and aliens." Now that he's gotten away from himself and into discussing more general possibilities, he's loosened up some and gotten into it. "Some, Earth seems to be on its own, but there's more than just regular humans: vampires, ghosts, fae, mutants, wizards, superheroes, the list goes on."

He takes a sip of his drink. "Mine's mostly the supernatural stuff, but we've had the occasional alien show up."

(Hellboy recognizes how dismissive it is to just lump all of the encounters he's had -- and he's probably had more of them than anyone else, just like with most anything else -- into the catch-all "aliens," but it's not like any of them really stuck around to exchange much cultural information.)

Garrus remained completely silent as he took all this in, for the most part keeping his expression even for the moment. He'd been through this already. A few times. It was utterly ridiculous, but here it was. Plain as day. He could really only justify dismissing it all as crap so many times before he just felt stupid.

Somehow after Hellboy had finished speaking he felt even more exposed then when he'd walked in with Shepard. He expected a human majority, but now there was so much more to consider. Things he really couldn't even begin to comprehend because the words were completely unfamiliar. More from human lore, perhaps.

"These supernatural elements from your Earth aren't on the best of terms, I take it? Or are all those weapons meant for the locals?"

He was glad that at least one of them couldn't read the agitated twitching of his mandibles. He wasn't sure how much Shepard had picked up over time, but it was a conscious effort to stop, just like the other tic. It wasn't just that he was the only turian; the outlook for his general survival managed to seem quite bleak just then. There was some amount of diversity, just not of the reassuring kind.

Shepard noticed Garrus' agitation - it was tough not to, as well as she knew him. If they were alone, she might've done something more to help - taken his hand, or at least given his arm a squeeze. As it was, she just gave him a gentle nudge, hopefully enough to keep him grounded.

"I guess there is always the theory of infinite universes," she suggested. "If you accept that, then you accept infinite possibilities. Including deities, magic and stuff like that."

Hellboy nods. "'Multiple histories' was how I'd heard it called as a kid. Some scientists I knew would debate about it for hours on end. A lot of it went over my head, but it was fun to hear them go at it."

(Yes, he really did just sweepingly describe the top minds of the Manhattan Project as "some scientists I knew as a kid.")

He pulls back from his brief nostalgia to consider how best to answer Garrus' question. "My world, back home, it's... gotten complicated in recent years. Here in Baedal, though, there's enough overall variety that folks are generally a lot more live-and-let-live. The weapons are because I'm an agent with Hellsing, and find it helpful to always be ready for trouble." He shrugs and adds, "Also, I just got the big gun back tonight, and the sword is... well, let's just say it's an heirloom, of the type you don't let out of your sight if you can help it."

Shepard's attention was not lost on him and though it was just a nudge, it was enough to jar him out of his thoughts. He could trust her, after all. He'd followed her into hell and back on more than one occasion, and come out of it alive. They could rely on each other not to let the other just curl up and die here, obviously.

"Hellsing.." He brightened up a bit at the mention of that, some of the dread that had been threatening to settle in moments before held at bay. There was even the slightest hint of eagerness in his eyes, at least the one easily visible without the visor in the way. "I've heard something about that," he looked aside at Shepard, who'd filled him in a bit, "and it definitely seems like the best place to put our particular skill sets to good use. You need a sniper.. well.." At this he brightened up even further, so much so as to seem just a bit cocky. "You're looking at the best."

He let his gaze wander over to the big gun as well as the other weapons, and only one word came to mind. "Impressive weaponry, by the way." At least by the look of it. Surely the mechanics weren't as advanced as what he was used to, but they certainly looked like they could do some damage and that was what ultimately counted.

Ah, Hellsing. This guy was with them, too. Shepard leaned against the bar casually, shoving her hands in her pockets. She had to smile a little at Garrus' posturing - well, it wasn't really posturing if you really were the best, right? And he was.

...Not that she was about to say that. Like his ego needed more stroking.

"He's not bad," she quipped, a half-smile curling her lip. "I talked to someone on the network yesterday - a Solomon Koenig? He said Hellsing might be willing to take us on, if we were interested."

He considers for a moment, then shrugs. "Sniping's not the first thing I'd think of? But part of that's 'cause, I'll be honest, I'm really a lousy shot. I make up for it by closing range, but then the gun usually gets knocked out of my hand after a couple shots and I have to take the fight to Fist City." And quite the fist he has. "A sniper could be useful, though, and I take it you guys have other combat skills besides. If you're good with fancy tech stuff, I'm sure that'll come in handy too."

(Of course he assumes space future people are good with "fancy tech stuff." The kids these days, with their googles and their faceybooks, someone hand him his walker.)

"It's a good job. Dangerous, but it needs doing. I know there are some folks in our cohort who're focused more on figuring out a way home, and I wish them luck in it, but in the meantime, I'm more useful keeping the city intact for them to do it in. And we've... had some losses recently, so yeah, I'm sure you're hiring." He nearly gets a bit maudlin there, but thinks of something and chuckles. "Of course, you'll probably have to get through tryouts with Alucard. He'll try to scare the crap out of you, and to be fair, he's very good at it. Just keep a calm head and show a little spine, and you should be okay."
somecalibrations: (just striking a pose)

[personal profile] somecalibrations 2012-04-20 06:49 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, he was feeling a lot better at this point, seeming to puff up a little with confidence as he crossed his arms again. "Oh, sure. Very useful. Efficient. You'll never want to go anywhere without one covering your back ever again." His mandibles flared at 'fancy tech stuff'. The poor man, he didn't know the half of it. It wasn't long ago that Garrus was working firing algorithms that probably would've made his head spin. He'd just been itching to get his hands on something ever since he'd gotten here. (Someone give the guy something to calibrate, you will never see him again.)

Still grinning, he glanced aside at Shepard again. The job was dangerous? Something about being scared? He almost wanted to laugh. Surely it wasn't anything he couldn't handle. But then, he'd have to explain how they'd just been fighting giant, galaxy-destroying, sentient warships and that would have gotten messy.

"I'm sure we'll do just fine. We don't scare easily."
cmdreffingshepard: (reinstated)

[personal profile] cmdreffingshepard 2012-04-20 07:05 am (UTC)(link)
"I've seen a lot of scary things," Shepard admitted with a grimace. She had nightmares about it, sometimes. More often lately, not that she was going to say that.

Not even to Garrus.

But the Reapers alone were more than enough to fuel her nightmares for the rest of her life. "Usually, when something tries to scare me, I just get pissed off," she finished with a shrug. "I'm happy to go through whatever... process they've got set up. After all, you're taking a risk to trust a newcomer, with no references and only their word."
hehaseatenthepancake: (goofy grin)

[personal profile] hehaseatenthepancake 2012-04-22 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Hellboy's chuckle takes on a darker tenor. They all claim to have seen scary stuff, and it's all fun and games until Alucard breaks out the shadowy tentacles and the eyes on every surface.

"Generally, unless the interview or the tryouts turn up something that's obviously bullshit, we tend to take applicants at their word. Either they're what they claim to be, or they'll get themselves killed early on. And yeah, that's been known to happen." He gives an airy wave. "Unlike those guys, though, you both look like you've seen some action. I'm sure you'll be fine."

Just in case, though, he'll be just outside the tryouts with sick buckets and Dr. McCoy's medical staff on standby.
