Costume Party in Honor of Lex Luthor's Birthday [OPEN]

As stated on the invitation, Adrian is throwing a costume party to celebrate Lex's twenty-fifth birthday at the Luthor-Veidt Building in Brock Marsh. Everyone is welcome, whether they know Lex or not. There's plenty of food and free alcohol (mostly wine, fancy beer, and champagne), music and a space for dancing, and room to mingle and make new friends. Some simple and classy decorations, purple of course, have been put up on the first and second floors to create a festive atmosphere.

(A note to those who might try to take the opportunity to go snooping: security is insanely tight. The elevators will not go beyond the first and second floors without a special code, and there's an elevator operator who is very obviously there to make sure you don't try anything funny. The stairwells are likewise under guard and the private areas of the first floor are locked and under camera surveillance.)

She helpfully (yes) bares them at him, for just a split second. "I guess they do go with everything."

"What, your teeth? I'm fond of them," he says with a laugh.

"Do you know our charming host?"

"Veidt or the birthday boy? I did the interior design here-" with a wave of her hand to generally indicate both the room they're in and the building more generally, "-so we're acquainted." And one might safely assume that that's why she's here.

"Right - you'd mentioned you were doing that." Interior design generally. "I haven't met either yet; I've not decided if I should say hello."

[rhinemaid]

"It's only polite." Ilde is also cheerfully prone to stirring the pot by pointing vampires at it, but nevermind that.

[deservesadaisy]

"One before the other, or does it matter, do you think?"

[rhinemaid]

"You could wish Lex happy birthday. You like the opportunity to crack bad age jokes, don't you?" They're lovely to each other.

[deservesadaisy]

"Only once you pass a century. Young people can be sensitive." They really should be separated in public.

[rhinemaid]

Ilde gives the bottom of his jacket a tug to straighten it, unnecessarily, and pokes him in the stomach. "Or: you're an ass."

[deservesadaisy]

"These aren't mutually exclusive theories," he says, laughing.

[rhinemaid]

"True." Sitting up on her knees, elbows on the back of the sofa, she crosses her ankles behind her and leans there, regarding him with a casually speculative air. "Are you really on your best behaviour?"

Is this really your best behaviour. He's not even that bad here, she just finds him entertaining.

"I suppose that depends on how you define 'best.' But much like the legendary Macheath, I intended to keep my teeth out of sight." Which was as good as anyone was likely to get.

Under the circumstances, it isn't bad- actually, under the circumstances, Ilde is more than a little curious to see how your average partygoer might react if they realize he isn't just tall and strange. It's mostly about testing limits, and only a little bit about watching humans scurry.

(A tiny, little, insignificant bit. She swears.)

"I suppose that'll do," she concedes, instead.

"I'm so glad I have your permission," he says, with a wry smile. "Besides, you know me. I prefer spectator to participant anyhow."

"You're a voyeur," she informs him, blandly, a little bit fond. The more she gets acquainted with Ivan, the less she thinks she actually knows about him - but that is one detail she'd feel comfortable swearing to.

[deservesadaisy]

"A hazard of longevity I suspect." Or a means of preserving it. "Thank you, by the way. For the interesting reading material." His tone is just as light, considering they could be easily overheard.

[rhinemaid]

Ilde is working on the assumption that it's safer to assume there are cameras recording everywhere in this building and if she can lipread, so can someone else; if Ivan ever finds out why she attended this evening, it won't be at the party.

"Did you get through it all?" She, admittedly, didn't.

[deservesadaisy]

"Mostly. A bit dry, but not without its good points." He smiles, easily, but she knows him well enough to see it's probably a bit of a show. "It gave me something to do while I was convalescing."

[rhinemaid]

"Are you feeling better under there?" It isn't strictly necessary to stretch up and press her thumb just under the bottom of his mask - an argument could be made that it is, in fact, not necessary at all - but evidently she considers Ivan to have already forfeited his personal space.

[deservesadaisy]

He catches her wrist, but after she's already done so. "Back to my formerly handsome self, yes. Though you'll have to take my word for it for now. It wouldn't do to violate the rules of the party."

[rhinemaid]

Obliging this so-called rule, Ilde swings her own white mask back in front of her eyes with her free hand. "We couldn't have that."

[deservesadaisy]

"Without propriety, where would we be?" he asks, more wicked than otherwise.

[rhinemaid]

"Probably about where you usually are, Ivan." It's obligatory, at this point.

[deservesadaisy]

If he gives her that sort of set up, he'll be almost offended if she doesn't take it.

"You're no better behaved."

[rhinemaid]

"Slander." Wait. Briefly diverted- "Is it slander when it's said out loud, or is it libel? I think libel is the one where you write it down. Is that right?"
