The Apache is much the same as it always is: dimly lit, with the jukebox playing in the background, and the bartender serving whatever's on tap.

"It was. The tape that was in my car before I came here," he says. "Sadly, I can't expect that any time soon." A bike was not a car, but at least Fish seems pleased.

"You'd probably end up paying out the ass to keep it running, anyway." Resources being what they are in the city. "Music wins, I think. It's the gift that keeps on giving, right? And now you have two tapes."

"I do." He considers the machine. "Clever. And Hounds of Love is a good album. I mean, The Kick Inside is the classic, but the whole second half is really interesting."

No one cares about your Kate Bush theories, Ivan.
fish: (knows all your secrets)

No, Fish cares, Ivan. He cares.

"You're a fan?" In his opinion, this conversation just got about a million times better.

"I have taste," Ivan says, as if it is self evident. Either he is playing this really, really deadpan or he's sincere; it's anyone's guess, but the gods decided he gets the tape regardless.

"Good answer."

Fish jumps a little, suddenly, as though an idea has just smacked him on the ass; it prompts him to reach into his shoulder bag, to begin pulling out...something. Some mysterious thing small enough to fit into his shoulder bag. It has a handle, anyway, of dull metal. "Hey, can I show you something?"

"Alright. What is it?" Ivan is mildly curious, and sees no reason to pretend he's not.
fish: (failure to blair witch)

He should be curious; this is, in Fish's opinion, one of the greatest objects in existence. It may be a bit foolish to whip it out in a dark alley and flash it for some dead guy he barely knows, but it's not like this is the first time he's performed that particular sequence of actions. He's never done it while wearing an eyepatch, so this is a first.
(And he was indeed wearing the same eyepatch during their group visit to that horrid play, so its presence shouldn't come as any surprise.)

He doesn't say anything just now, merely tugs the object free, unbuttons the suede leather sleeve and slips it off. What's underneath is a mirror, its back facing outward at first, a small symbol engraved on the plate. When he turns it around—looking expectant, maybe a little excited—so the mirrored surface faces Ivan, his reflection should appear. Whether or not this is a surprise will depend on the particulars of his own vampirism, of course, of which Fish has no idea...but he's hoping there'll be some sort of reaction beyond so what.

There is certainly a reaction, muted as it is. Ivan goes still, a bit of his light, jocular air fading away. "Jesus," he says, and reaches out to take the mirror. "May I?"

He hasn't seen his own face in almost 200 years.
fish: (teeny tiny)

[personal profile] fish 2012-04-22 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee hee.

Fish allows the mirror to exchange hands, feeling reluctant about it, but willing to trust—or, well, hoping—that the old man won't suddenly flip out and smash it or steal it or something equally unfortunate. He could say something, but...he's not sure what wouldn't sound lame, so holds his tongue for now.

"This is bloody surreal," he says, watching himself say it. After a moment, he decides he'll have to tell Ilde she's right about his face when it's too clean-shaven.

Finally, he hands it back. "A bit unnerving, almost." But intriguing all the same.
fish: (perfection is overrated)

[personal profile] fish 2012-04-22 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
"I know, right?" Now that they're talking about it, and he has the mirror back and all, he has to glimpse his own reflection again. He can't help it, really. It's just so...there. And stuff. Look at him, he has a face!

...Right, talking.

"How long's it been?" A lady never tells, but neither do ladies tend to have beards, so.

"Long enough that fashionable facial hair has changed quite a bit," he says, amused. "Several human lifetimes."

"Whoa." Whoa? Whoa, you're way old? Nice. "Uh, I mean, that's awesome. You totally don't look it... you were what, like, forty?"

He's affixing the snaps of the mirror sleeve as he says this; soon enough, it's being tucked away again, more or less safe in his canvas messenger bag. No one's going to suspect he has such a valuable object hidden in that thing, or so he assumes, since it's obviously secondhand.

"Around there, yes." Ivan walks the fine line between 'that's so long ago I'm not certain' and 'I'm just a dick who doesn't like to be too specific.'

"Was the mirror from home?"

Fish enjoys dicks, so that form of answer is fine by him. (I could reword this sentence but I'm not going to.)

"Nope. I dunno where it's from, but it's definitely mine. I just had one of those feelings, you know? Before I even knew what it was. Some guy had it, I had to ask him for it. I'm pretty sure he thinks I'm a weirdo now, I couldn't stop making faces at myself." He pauses to take another drag (finally) from his cigarette. "I feel kinda spoiled now, though, since it hasn't been like a hundred years or anything since I saw my face. I can actually... if I set up this thing with a mirror and a camera, I actually show up on film, it's just a pain in the ass since the tech here is so hit-and-miss. Unless you're, like, loaded."

"Quite so," Ivan says, amusement restored after that flicker of something more genuine. "Regardless of how long it's been, I imagine it's still something of a shock. One gets used to not seeing anything, and then." He shrugs, urbane. "It's a small shock, but a shock all the same."
