The Apache is much the same as it always is: dimly lit, with the jukebox playing in the background, and the bartender serving whatever's on tap.

“Oh, sorry!” ...it is not the most repentant, no, tossed off that way like she's just fluttering on through her evening, but in a bar this crowded it'd be pretty tough to get through the entire night without accidentally brushing up against a stranger and the way she'd leaned sideways over the bar with her weight on that arm had just leaned the two of them a little too close. Despite Kate's reaction, it's friendly enough - if she had a dollar for every time she got glared at in a bar, huh? - but it fades into slight concern as she catches the rest of that reaction. “Are you okay? Crowds not really your thing?”

"No," Kate begins again, still not believing what she's seeing. She isn't replying about crowds and though she is definitely not okay right now, that no isn't for that question either. It's for the entire subject being different from what Gilly's referring to. That ring. Kate hasn't seen it in a few good years, not since Susan got engaged and spoke of wanting it as her own engagement ring. Their father couldn't bear parting with it and it's a subject that was quickly dropped, never to be brought up again. She'd never expected to see it again, outside of her father's office safe, and especially not here. There's no mistaking that is her mother's very own engagement ring. Nobody else had that custom made ring.

But then again, Baedal is a place where tricks are played everyday. One can't be absolutely sure.

She points with her right index finger at Gilly's neck before speaking. "Where did you get that?"

“The same way everybody else got everything tonight, I guess. So it's yours?” After all that rigamorale to get the bartender's attention, she waves him away when he comes toward them now, shifting so she's sitting on the barstool instead of kneeling on it, hooking the heels of her boots at one leg of the thing. She's already tugging the chain around so she can get at the clasp to unstring the ring from her necklace, adding, “It is really lovely-- I didn't want it to get lost or something before I could return it to whoever it belongs to.”

"No... I mean, yeah, it's mine. Actually, it belonged to my mother." To Kate's shame, sometimes she forgets to think about her. They say it gets easier with time and maybe they're right, whoever they are. But still, she feels like she should think about her mother more often than not, at least once a day, just so it'll feel like no one's forgotten her smile, her hugs, or the way she used to braid Kate's hair after Kate just wanted to leave it loose and go to karate. There are many feelings going on here and it's because of one tiny (well, not so tiny in the world of gemstones) ring.

"It used to be her engagement ring," Kate explains as she tucks a piece of hair behind her ear, using past tense though not really sure if it's getting the right point across. "It used to be in a safe."

It isn't difficult to figure out the significance - or the reason for it - when one takes that past tense in context with the rest of Kate's reaction to the ring, and although there's a lot you can say about Gilly that's less than particularly flattering, 'emotionally unobservant' isn't actually on that list. She drops the ring off her chain into her hand, tucking it under her fingers as she clasps the chain back where it belongs, making sure her tiger's eye hasn't gone AWOL in the process--

“Here you go.” Offering the ring out to Kate, she adds, “It seems like the sort of thing you might wanna have nearby.”

She holds out her hand automatically, trance-like, to receive the ring. For a second, it feels like the gods of Baedal are waving her home in her face. Kate hasn't actually been back in her world for years and here goes something that reminds her, almost cruelly, of what she used to have. It never occurred to her that she might not get to go home for good until now and it's a thought she doesn't want to entertain. Ever.

"Thanks," Kate offers as she switches position with her hand to take the ring instead of waiting for it to be dropped in her hand. "I wonder why they sent something of hers instead of something of mine."

To make you miserable, Kate. Duh.

“I guess it's just one of those things.” Ours is not to reason why, and all-- not that that stops anyone from trying. Or that it should stop anyone from trying, the way Gilly sees it; life would be boring if everybody just went with it, always.
