Who: Patrick and Hawa
What: A second meeting

Patrick was starting to settle into this place. He'd hunkered down at the inn while he looked about for something to generate income for him while he was stuck here. By parts he'd explored -- certainly not everywhere, but he was beginning to get the lay of the land. His morning jogs brought him down streets that were becoming familiar. Routine.

And that was a problem.

He had things waiting for him back home; he couldn't afford to just settle in here comfortably. But he consoled himself with the fact that he would at least learn for his trouble while he was here. With magic an out-in-the-open concept, it was an opportunity he may not get again.

So it was high time he tried to get in contact with Hawa again, and take him up on his offer. Beyond that, he'd rather enjoyed the fey's company that day and well, seeing him again sounded good in general. Not that he was admitting that. Oh no.

It was early afternoon when he found himself wandering outside, eager to get out of the room. It took him a bit to work the CiD so that he wouldn't be shouting out to the entire cohort.

A couple tries. Technology wasn't his strong suit. He was better at old things, books, pencil and paper, magic, toasters. When he got it though, he lifted it up closer to his mouth to speak. "So Hawa? Are you around? I think I owe you a drink, and I'd love to pick your brain. So--" Pausing, Patrick frowned. Was this thing echoing. No? Huh. "So I..." No, definitely an echo. He paused and looked around. Coming from nearby. And... up?

"So I was thinking maybe we could meet up." That was his voice, all right. From up in the tree.

Hawa paused. When had they flipped from teasing zone into serious mode? He looked at Patrick, almost gauging, thinking about what he could awkwardly say to that. At last he reached out, bringing his hand down solidly on Patrick's shoulder, giving it a rough squeeze.

"You're a good kid," he told him bluntly. "Humans your age shouldn't have to worry about that sort of thing." He shook his head slowly. So young. Those at that age should never have to fight.

Sorry, Hawa. That was Patrick's doing. He do looked a bit surprised by the hand on his shoulder. Turning his gaze up towards Hawa, he looked at him thoughtfully for a long moment. He appreciated the words. Slowly though a smile pulled over his lips. "See? You really sound like an old man when you go and talk like that!"

Hawa went what looked like the slightest shade of pink, not exactly thrilled to have the teasing turned about on him, now, when he was being serious. Never one to back down, he drew himself up. "Well, compared to you, maybe I would be old," he groused.

...Ha. Did he make him blush? Even a little bit? Patrick laughed at the grousing and clapped Hawa on the shoulder. "Compared to me. Another kid jab, huh?" He bit back another laugh. "I guess that's the divide between you and me."

"Oh well. Maybe we'll get over the age thing eventually," Hawa said with a snort, giving Patrick's shoulder a light push in return. Just in revenge for that laughing at him--and to cover up the slight embarrassment.

Patrick rocked just a bit at that push, grinning just a bit. "I'm sure we will. I'm old for my age anyway." He shook his head and leaned back. "So, I was thinking, maybe we could have these little chats about magic on a regular basis. I can probably come up with something besides hot chocolate, for variety."

"Variety's the spice of life...isn't it?" Hawa spoke the saying with a quirked eyebrow, then shifted his weight from foot to foot. "I don't mind doing that. I ain't too busy." And magic was always a topic of interest-- It reminded him of training those fresh to the upholders, those wide-eyed newbies who barely knew protection magic from attack. It reminded him of his own days like that.

"That's what they say! But, great! Really, great. I'm looking forward to it." Patrick was already considering. He could pick Hawa's brain. Add to that the fact that he genuinely enjoyed the other's company -- he was challenging really, which was interesting. So this was shaping up well. "Great!"

A pause. "So... you're living in that tree, huh? Is that comfortable?" Patrick had a bad history with trees.

"Just let me know whenever you want to meet up. Ain't hard for me to get around," Hawa said with a nod. He just flew about everywhere, could answer a call pretty well. Considering that he had a growing degree of like for Patrick, it wasn't hard to conceive he'd come if the other got in contact with him.

Hawa paused himself at the question, chuckled. "Well, yeah. Got a nice hollow, can fly off wherever whenever you need to. Good view, even," he told the other.

"I'll give you a call." Patrick did have to imagine that being able to fly could come in handy. It would certainly save him a few bus fares back home, but that was beside the point.

He grinned a bit, lifting a hand to rub at the back of his neck. "Sounds cozy, really. Well, as trees go anyway."

Hawa shook his head slightly at that, amused. "About as cozy as you could want, for an owl. Personally, I'll never get how you lot get by staying inside. It's far too closed in." Even with windows or what have you, it didn't change that something was blocking out the sky, an easy exit, an escape.

Patrick laughed a little. "That's funny. My problem with trees is that they are so unclosed in." A pause and he added. "I fell out of one when I was a kid. I was lucky I didn't wind up in the hospital because of it, but since then I've got a bit of a phobia I guess."

He glanced around. "I guess though, if you're used to winging through the open sky, being in a house could be constricting."

Hawa looked at him with more understanding at that, frowning. "That makes sense, then," he allowed, inclining his head. "Don't blame you for wanting to avoid them if that sort of thing happened."

He smiled--quick and rueful. "It is, believe me. I don't mind being inside one for a little bit at a time, but I wouldn't want to stay in one."

Patrick nodded at that. "Understandable. Heh. We humans with our feet firmly planted have to make due the best we can, after all."

Though people dreamed of flying. Patrick dreamed of flying, without the confines of a stuff airplane.

Hawa chuckled. "Tromping about must get tiring. Maybe one of these days you'll all figure out how to grow a set of wings." Because Hawa couldn't so much as look at airplanes or those contraptions without shivering. A mix of the iron, the metal weightiness of it, the sheer unnaturalness of flying without proper wings. The only one that didn't unnerve him were those--hot air balloons, was it? Still, those weren't the easiest to control, now were they?

"It really does. Especially when you can't afford much outside the subway or busfare." Woe was Patrick. But he laughed a little. "Yeah, maybe one of these days, we'll get our acts together and sprout wings. Maybe. If that day comes, I'll be in the market for a flying instructor though, because I can't imagine I'd be very good at it."

"Flying into the ground and into every conceivable object, huh?" Hawa grinned at him, lifting both eyebrows. "Don't worry, if we're still around each other then I'll give you some pointers. To at least keep you from knocking around that head of yours too much."

"It wouldn't end well for me or anyone in the immediate area." He grinned right back. "You're turning to be a really useful guy to know, Hawa. Even in hypothetical situations."

"I like to think that I'm a pretty useful kind of a guy, Patrick," he quipped in return, folding his arms over his chest. "If not a bunch of other good things right along with it." He wasn't modest by any means.

Patrick raised an eyebrow at that, laughing before reaching over to pat Hawa on the shoulder. "Modesty chief among these?" Another little laugh before he added, sincerely, "From what I can tell though, you are. Useful and other good things."

"Of course. The most modest." Hawa laughed before he looked at Patrick closer, curious and amused both. "You ain't so bad yourself. You make a mean hot chocolate, at the very least."

"That's right, I have my skills," Patrick answered with a grin. Hot chocolate making. Vocabulary of dead or dying languages. A knack for crossword puzzles. A mean jump shot. A feel for magic that was out of the grasp of most of his fellow man.

"What else do you got to boast about, then?" Hawa was ribbing him again, a little goading but mostly curious. "And don't say your hair." He had pretty well mussed it up by now, though. No tidying it up while Hawa was around, that was for sure. It was almost reminiscent of how an owl had a tendency to pluck or tug or nip at hair or otherwise with its beak in a show of affection (though he'd deny that if it were pointed out).

Patrick opened his mouth to mention his hair but found himself stopped. Oh. Well. Ok then. "Well then, ah. I've got a knack for languages. Helps when you're trying to weed through written traditions of several different cultures hoping for some allusion to something magical. Oh, and I'm decent at basketball."

Hawa grinned-- Heh. He anticipated that correctly, did he? Cute, Patrick. "You'd have a field day with all the texts we have where I'm from," he said. "Never be able to get through them all in your lifetime. Not even to mention the atheneum." And, of course, he didn't expand on what 'the atheneum' was. Always so helpful.

His eyebrow lifted at 'basketball'. Then he shook his head. "Sport with the guys bouncing the ball around, right?" Though really, you could apply that to a...lot of sports...
