It's like paradise, spread out with a butter knife :: [OPEN]

Who: EVERYONE
What: Réjean has decided that more people ought to celebrate and help raise a bit of dosh for one of his favourite bars. See: flyer.
Where: The Apache.
When: Misdi night and into the wee hours of the morning.
Warnings: Discussion of Pickman's manky feet.

The Apache is much the same as it always is: dimly lit, with the jukebox playing in the background, and the bartender serving whatever's on tap. Tonight, the bar is packed with people from all across the city, different cantons and cohorts, all out to celebrate surviving the fungal plague. Patrons are encouraged to buy tickets for a door prize with the proceeds going to repair the damage tunnelling ants made to the cellar.

"You're probably right," she agrees, lifting her glass in salute. "But I will keep it in mind, next time I have a chance to talk to people."

She laughs softly, turning a little in her seat. "I swore I wasn't gonna do more of this picking-at-city-mysteries thing with you tonight. I was gonna try to be different, for once, set that aside for a while. Guess the temptation's too much, sometimes."

"I bring that out in people." Work? Unpleasantness?

Jack waves a hand, dismissive of his own accomplishments. It's something he's actually proud of, and for that reason he's reluctant to brag about it too much, lest his ego take a blow. He appreciates the parallel with Aimery's own experience, however, and the lack of remorse over the hostel surprises him.

"No? Not for you anymore, hm." He doesn't believe that for a second, but he remembers what being snatched up from Bete Noire was like, being suddenly deprived of everything he'd accomplished, and he's kind enough not to linger on that subject. "What kind of job offer?"

"Well, still," she protested. "Tonight's supposed to be for relaxing and celebrating. It'll do nobody any good to get wound back up into how bad this place sucks or what we do and don't know. There's plenty of time for that later."

"Like all the other times," he deadpans.

"Butler and cook for a pair of bachelors," he said, smile and tone turning a bit self-deprecating, "Sounds like a step down, I know, but the duties are along the same lines and seeing after a pair of bachelors should be far more manageable than a hundred of them."

Not that his hostel had reached max capacity what with the upper floors just finishing, but there had been times when he had fifty guests under his roof, and he'd had to learn all their names and make sure they were taken care of. It was a big bundle of work. Aimery shrugged as if he didn't care, then waved loosely towards the bar, "I was off to get another drink, let me get you something?"

Then he spotted the glass in Jack's hand. Oh. Aimery corrected himself, "Let me get you another something?"
gotbottle: (oh yeah?)

[personal profile] gotbottle 2011-08-29 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
"Do I need to get you another drink to drown all this smartassery?" Rachel shoots back, but it's nowhere near as reproachful as it could be; her tone is warm, she's laughing a little. "There you go, you and your facts in a bar again."
toooldforlosing: (I bet they danced them a jig)

Raylan laughs himself. "Sorry. Bad habits die hard, as they say."

"It's a good start, to be sure." A pair of bachelors raises certain suspicions in his mind as to whether they're bachelors at all, but only because he's been drinking and the idea tickles him a bit. (Little does he know, he's acquainted with this particular pair.)

To the drink offer, he side-eyes the other man just briefly. He knows they don't give new arrivals enough money to be buying everyone's drinks, sir.

"Well–" he holds up one finger as if to say One moment, lifts his glass, and downs the not insubstantial remainder of his whiskey in one perhaps disturbingly unflinching swallow. "There, fixed." A smile, catty. "How about a beer, for a chaser." That won't be too hard on Aimery's pocketbook, at least.
goodeintentions: ({ Maybe not platonically.)

[personal profile] goodeintentions 2011-08-29 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
Indeed they don't, and it was actually some other bar patron that would end up paying for Jack's and Aimery's drinks, but even if Jack had called him on the looseness with funds, he wouldn't have told him that. Besides, it's not like he bought all his own drinks either. Aimery grinned broadly when Jack swallowed his drink in one impressive go, then forced his face into (blatantly faked) seriousness and gave a pursed-lipped nod of approval, as if congratulating him on his problem solving skills.

"Well, beer is technically something," he agreed, grin returning, "So beer it is. I'll be back in a moment." Aimery headed off to the bar for their drinks and returned a minute or two later after having to have the 'I promise this is my last and no I'm not going to drink them both' discussion with a well-meaning bartender.

"I missed all that," he admits. "I went out for the ant spore thing, though. Not sure 'bout the whole gods situation yet, but it's somethin' to look into. Least they seem to be interested in keepin' people goin' versus torturing us, no?" He takes a drink. "How's Hellsing?"

[identity profile] bangyoudead.livejournal.com 2011-08-29 08:02 am (UTC)(link)
"Your face is beautiful, fille, he should feel honored." He's still smiling, but he's dead serious about that, of all things. And then he sees what she's got and laughed, and lets her have her way with him.

[identity profile] bangyoudead.livejournal.com 2011-08-29 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
He knows it's tough on her. She missed a lot - it's startling to him to see kids he knew at the school when it was still a school out in uniform, and those are just students. Her own children, and the circumstances in which they are her children? Remy can't come close to understanding, no matter what his awareness might be. He knows she's hard on herself (like recognizes like), and so he tries to make her smile about it, when he can.

"Yeah, well. They're pretty cool kids." His smile echoes hers, and Remy reaches over for her hand, idle, silently supportive. (It's a small remark, but they both know the significance of how easy he's taking to life with his girlfriend's kids.)

"It seems we're from very different worlds." It's intriguing, how similar in style and yet different in history their homes seem to be.

Adrian nods at Jack's response to the pharaoh, offering him a small, apologetic smile that seems to carry a hint of more personal regret than one might expect, just for a moment. "A disastrous flaw that I would hope anyone attempting to emulate him would take great caution in rectifying. Like Alexander's passion for war. I think a great leader should be able to capable of appreciating the scope of a predecessor's vision while improving on his methods." A great leader such as Adrian Veidt would like to be, one day.

His expression grows a little more intimate as he raises his own glass, eying Jack over the rim. "I'd be interested in your efforts to sell me on all the virtues Gilboa has to offer, Mr. Benjamin."

"A lot of the people I know did." She raises one shoulder in answer to the remark about 'gods'. "You know my feelings on it. I've never run across a single bit of evidence of all-powerful beings that didn't turn out to be aliens playing at mysticism, or being miscast in that role by people who don't know better." And until present with evidence to the contrary, that's exactly how she'll continue to think.

"I like working there! It's interesting to work for women for a change. And considering how difficult it is to scrounge up modern technology here, I'm grateful for a job that lets me work with what's available. And...it's nice to be back in the game."

Normal gets a new definition when you work for an organization like Torchwood -- and you get a new appreciation for the things that can't be classified as normal.

"That sounds like an interesting proposition, but how am I supposed to find the colorful ones? Are you going to direct them my way?"

"And Tommy is hoping you'll blow things up with him," she says, twining her fingers through his with the relaxed ease of someone who's used to the way they fit together.

After a while, things start to get comfortable -- never truly steady, with the lives they lead, but some approximation of reliable, which is a quality worth its weight in gold and rubies, where they come from. Wanda is hoping they can extend some of that to the boys during their time here, but she's observed enough of Baedal to know that there's still some trouble to be found.

They'd probably get bored without.

"S'always aliens." Or mutants, but he doesn't say it; mentioning things like my girlfriend is more powerful than the Biblical God tends to weird people out. Wanda, Jean... hell, that kid Nate. Ororo, for fuck's sake. (Even him. New Sun...)

Skeptical doesn't quite cut it.

"Huh." It's hard to tell, but his opinion is actually a little shifted, knowing it's run by women. "Long as it's good for you. Seems like this place needs the help though, with the Militia and all."

"I promise it won't be nothin' you'll miss." It'll be fine, they'll call it training.

It's somehow more real with the boys; that layer of surreal seclusion is stripped away when they're forced to exist around other people that know them. It could all be over in a second, because of what they do and just who they are, as individuals, but for now, they're better this way.

Jim grins. "I could. I could weed out the really out-of-hand ones first, that way, too. Weirdo screening. Everyone should have it."

He takes a sip of his beer, surveying the crowds for a moment, before adding, "Not that I don't think you could take care of it yourself."

"Good save," Tosh laughs. "I can take care of myself, but I appreciate the sentiment. I suppose it would save me time to not have to deal with the weirdos. Assuming we have the same definition of weird."

"This evening? That would be anything that would ruin my suit." Which leaves a great deal more leeway for thrills than one might imagine -- Adrian is quite good at keeping trouble at bay without sacrificing the hard work of his tailor. "And what about you?"

Though Lex rolls his eyes, he smiles anyway. He had expected Aimery to win and is pleased that the man took every advantage of the opportunity. He informs Aimery that he'll be right back and returns with another round.

"Well, that's the first part of our bargain. What kind of secret do you want to know?"
