Notes: I've got thread starters for Arthur and Steph, but all are welcome! The settings are flexible, so feel free to come up with whatever. I will roll with it!

Kalinda hasn't been getting near as much extra work as she would like. Rather, she isn't making as much money from her extra work as she would like. Money isn't tight, exactly, but it isn't as abundant as she's used to it being. So much of what she does is built on her image, and that image requires maintenance, that maintenance requires cash. She has a feeling her current assignment, which has had her running from one end of the city to the other, isn't going to result in her being paid the previously agreed upon amount, being as how it's not producing the result her client hoped for.

Fortunately, she took half up front.

"There is that," Kalinda agrees dryly. And it is depressing, if she were the sort to give in to those kinds of feelings. (She can be, but she'll deny it to her dying breath.) She similarly allows the conversation to move on. "And look, a silver lining." If people really bought into the notion that the city brings people here for a reason, perhaps rebuilding is Ariadne's.

As to the nature of her work, Kalinda shifts her weight slightly, still casual. "Whatever I'm put on the scent of. I figure out what the facts of a case are, whatever they are, and figure out how it can best help the client."

"My mom says every cloud has one. Silver linings, that is." Ariadne smiles faintly, shoving her hands in her pockets. She's not sure if she buys the idea that they're all brought here for a reason, but she also hasn't been here long enough to form too many opinions about the situation.

"So is he a defense attorney of some sort? Is he a real hardass?" She attempts it as a kind of joke, but she's interested in knowing - what kind of person is she, and what kind of person does she choose to work for?

It sounds like she might have a lot of useful information, but knowing what kind of person she is, might indicate how willing she'd be to share. With her, or with Arthur. She knows Arthur will want to find out everything he can about Baedal.

Kalinda can't say that she's fully sold on the idea that there's a reason each of them was kidnapped, either. She isn't even completely certain that this whole thing isn't some kind of dream, and that she isn't actually lying in a hospital bed in a coma back in Chicago. But in all the strange dreams she's ever had, none of them have even come close to this. It's best to treat it like reality, she figures.

To the question of whether or not Alan Shore is a hardass, Kalinda tips her head to one side, as if slightly annoyed because it may be true. "Yeah," she delivers somewhat flatly, "he really rides me." She's creating a truly sterling reputation for Shore here. Truly. Then she lifts her brows, provides some levity. "I like my job."

It may be the most honest thing she's said all day.

Ariadne could tell her for certain that they aren't dreaming. Well, as far as her totem is concerned, at least. But mum's the word on all of that. As far as everyone in Baedal (except Arthur) is concerned, she's just an architect. The real world sort.

Whatever constitutes "the real world" at this point, anyway.

"Liking what you do is important," she says with a grin. "There's really no point, if you don't. As far as I'm concerned, anyway."

Ariadne's idealism is as endearing as it is sickening in its saccharine sort of way. To Kalinda, at least, but she's admittedly more cynical than most. Idealism is something that others wear better than she does, in her opinion.

"You're not wrong there. And speaking of work, I should get back to it. It was nice meeting you. I'm sure I'll see you around, yeah?" She smiles with some warmth before she backs up a step and glances over her shoulder to make sure her mark has moved on.

"Ah, yeah, you too," Ariadne says, a little sheepish. She didn't mean to keep Kalinda from her very important job, after all.

"And, hey, if you ever find yourself in need of an architect, I offer good rates to people in the cohort." Her pitch is coming along nicely, if she says so herself.

Oh, she's positively precious. "Thanks. I'll keep you in mind." With a little wave, Kalinda turns to hurry off down the lane on her way to her next stop. When she gets far enough that she's out of sight, that's when she'll take out her notebook and make note of their conversation. There's something about Ariadne that Kalinda likes, a potential for something, and that's worth keeping an eye out for her.
