Raylan is angry. There are some who might argue Baedal has nothing to do with that, but it's different here than it was at home. He's a prisoner, even if his prison is city-sized. Even if he's free to run every morning (like he does) and go to the bar every night (...which he usually does too, though more for eavesdropping and brooding than to get properly drunk). Working for the sheriff feels like collusion, but at least Norrington hasn't asked him to do anything he can't do, so far.

The militia's broadcast had turned his stomach, but he doesn't know whose brain to put a bullet into for that. A criminal, even a band of criminals... you can fight that, he thinks. A corrupt government that rules by martial law - that's something else again.

So he gets up, goes for a run, works his beat, goes shopping for goddamn groceries, spends his evenings in bars, and bites down on how much this place rubs him wrong.

He thinks he'd best not get questioned by the militia again, because he doesn't know if he'll be able to keep his mouth shut. But even those who don't know him well might be able to identify a man with an itchy trigger finger.

She raises an eyebrow, still grinning. "Oh, I see. Incentive. it worked, but here's the problem with incentive: it has to be repeated if you want the desired behavior to continue."

She shifts a little closer, kissing him again.

He just returns the kiss, rather than come up with a smart answer. This wasn't really how he'd intended the evening to go, but he's not objecting. He's not going to push to go any faster than she wants, but lazy making out is still good.

And, it should be noted, he's reasonably good at it.

Lazy making out is just fine, for the record. Especially with someone good at it--and, by the way, she's no slouch herself. She's fine if it just stays at making out; Initiating much more when one or both parties is impaired is a problematic kind of thing, bit some enthusiastic making out? Yes, please.

It's quite some time later when he says, "You should probably just stay, late as it is." His hand's still on her cheek, but he grins lazily as he adds, "I promise to be behave, but I'll take the bathtub if you'd feel more comfortable."

Or they can just keep making out a while.

She laughs, soft, a bit breathless, shaking her head. "You don't have to do that--but I do appreciate that you were willing. I trust you. I'll stay, and you don't have to give up your bed for the bathtub."

She wraps her arms around his neck, underscoring those assurances--and, because, this whole making-out-more thing is an idea that has some merit.

"Good." He kisses her again. "Wouldn't do to give you incentive to stay alive, then send you out to make your way home drunk at this hour of the morning."

Perfect logic.

She laughs, shifting closer. "I was gonna fuss about that, like, making sense, but I guess if we're not in a bar, you're allowed."
