He doesn't miss the way she brightens up when Boromir's mentioned, and he barely manages not to roll his eyes.

"How long you been here?"

"It's been... my goodness." Her face falls a bit. "Six months, now. And you?"

[aviophobia]

He shrugs. "Give or take three months, I think. It's not exactly precise - I was here for a couple months, went home, and now I'm back."

[obscuredvision]

"You went home?" She blinks at him a few times, and then she holds up her free hand, shaking her head. "No, never mind. We can talk about that when I come see you during office hours."

There are patients to be helped right now, after all. They need to come first and they need McCoy's undivided attention.

[aviophobia]

He nods, but his attention is mostly focused on the man in front of him. "I don't fully understand it anyhow. No use in spinning my wheels trying to figure out how it works."

[obscuredvision]

"Just as mysterious an arrival as the first time?" She shakes her head. "I suppose it was too much to hope this place would be accommodating and give us a little bit of a clue with things like this. Oh, well."

[aviophobia]

He nods. "One minute I'm on the Enterprise, the next I'm here. Barely even blinked." He pulls out a final hypospray cartridge, fires it into the man's neck. "Now rest up. You'll be okay soon."

Ava takes a moment to make sure the man is well tucked-in, and comfortable. "There. You call one of us if you need anything, all right?"

She returns her attention to McCoy, picking up his medkit again, ready to follow him. "That had to be disappointing, being back here."

"Sucked." He's succinct as always, moving on to the next patient, tricorder humming back to life. "Reckon there's some people here I'm glad to see again, but overall, I'd rather be there."

She follows him, medkit at the ready. It's nice, honestly, to feel useful again. Ava has been at loose ends since her employer vanished and she lost her job.

"I believe it. There are people here I care about but I think it would be better to miss them than to stay on here."

[aviophobia]

He nods. "On the one hand, I'm glad to be able to see my dog again, on the other ... " He shrugs, then adds, "But I'm glad to be able to do some good here. Gotta make the best of things."

[obscuredvision]

"You have a dog?" she asks, trying to steer the conversation in a more cheerful direction. "What kind? What's your dog's name?"

Somehow she's not surprised he has one; he fits in so well here and doesn't mind all the other dogs.

[aviophobia]

"Her name's Savannah." His face softens a little - it's clear he loves his baby girl. "She's a mutt - got her from one of the temples, actually." He names another temple in Aspic. "She just wouldn't leave me alone."

His smile melts her a little--how do you not melt a little at the sight of a man waxing affectionate over his dog?

"That's lovely. I've thought about taking a dog or two home myself, but I'm out of work right now. Maybe once I find a steady job again."

[aviophobia]

"They'd be happy to follow you home, too, I'm sure." He moves on to the next patient, clicking on the tricorder again. "Especially if you keep bringing food."

"I thought it best. I wasn't sure what--or if--they were eating."

She follows him to the next bedside. It's heartbreaking how many people are here, needing help.

"Do you volunteer here regularly, Dr. McCoy?"

[aviophobia]

He nods. "I try to make it down to one of the temples a couple of nights a week. Usually do one a week - try and get the numbers down a little."

[obscuredvision]

"If you could use the help, I could meet you on those nights," she offers, confident as can be. "It isn't as if I'm doing much with my time right now. I'd rather be useful, if I can be."

[aviophobia]

"I wouldn't mind having an assistant, but you'll need to be careful." He glances at her, brow furrowed slightly in concern. "Don't want you getting sick."

[obscuredvision]

She freezes a moment, inwardly, though her smile remains in place, her practiced mask of pleasant calm holding firm. Does he know what she's up to? What originally brought her here?

...No. He couldn't possibly.

"I'm sure I'll be fine," she assures him. "If you can use the help, I'll come meet you at the temples when I can."

[aviophobia]

"Yeah, sure," McCoy agrees, nodding. "Still, couldn't hurt to wear a mask or something; I'll pick one up for you."

...Well, shoot. There's no way to protest this without giving her (admittedly ill-advised) plan away.

She smiles, glancing down at their patient. "Thank you. It's very kind of you."

[aviophobia]

He nods, returning his attention to the man in front of them. "Wouldn't want you getting sick on my account."

[obscuredvision]

She just feels downright guilty, now, for what she's planned to do. Like she's going to personally insult him by getting sick on purpose.

"I suppose a helper really isn't any help if they turn into a patient."

[aviophobia]

"Not really." He shrugs. "Kind of defeats the purpose. But that's why we take precautions."
