Mafaton is rebuilding. It's a slow but sure process, one the city is well used to. New people are moving in, old people are moving up. Same goes for Mafaton's own Sheriff's Office. The building was targeted in the riots, and the old Sheriff's gone missing presumed dead.

There is a new Sheriff now, and a new floor. Most of the furniture has been replaced and someone fastidious has nailed an updated map of Mafaton to the wall. A large beaked dog creature rests on a blanket, keeping an eye on the door and people coming and going. The office is never really quiet.

The Sheriff herself is occupying a desk out in the main hall. She's using whatever downtime available to square away some paperwork, occasionally glancing up across the room as if expecting someone. The desk itself does not look like it belongs here, no doubt salvaged and dragged out of some other room in the building now deemed unsafe.

This Rankle creature receives from Erik nothing more than the one look, but he does press his lips into something akin to a smile of acknowledgment as the Sheriff explains its presence. Poor old thing, the expression seems to say, although he personally doesn't care very much.

Now, down to business. "Good to meet you. And yes, I've...heard. And seen. I'd just begun spending more time in Mafaton when the contamination began... house hunting, actually." Not only that, but it sounds better, he feels. He may still be wet behind the ears by Baedal standards, but doesn't want to come off that way immediately.

The bird-hound (or whatever it is) keeps staring long after it loses the privilege of Erik's attention. That's all it does though. Stares. Shatterchil pays it no mind.

"Yeah? What draws you to Mafaton?" Post-calamity Mafaton in particular. Vultures and tourists need not apply. There are enough scavengers rooting around in the gutters and bars, but that's not really the vibe she's getting here. There's genuine interest veiled in that otherwise standard inquiry.

"Commonality," he says, plainly—and again with that thin smile of his. "Recent events in this canton have struck a personal chord."

That and the housing is extra cheap right now...but that's just a convenience, not a reason, and he's not yet sure what Shatterchil thinks of glibness. So. Better to air on the side of caution, usw.
