At that he smiles, and there's a moment where it's the sort of smile that says he's just going to pick her up and go right now - no. He is absent of any immediate impulses besides the one to be near her. (That's the only rational one, anyway, as the desire to put Erik out a metaphorical airlock and wish away any memory of his appearance is not one he can indulge in.)

"If he knows, he'll get paranoid." And considering this is a man whose only loyalty is his own vision anyway, that would be bad. "I think, given the things that go on in this place, we'll be able to find something to put him to work on pretty quick."

Manipulative, yes. But necessary. The devil's hands are always going to be busy; they just need to be able to see them.
