It's startling, but it's somehow the best possible time for her to have revealed herself. Nothing is going to interrupt how awful he feels for Megan, especially not his own internalized discomfort about non-humans. Instead of looking frightened or repulsed, he just looks at her, and thinks about the magic that makes her, and the courage it's taken her to be her in the midst of everything that's gone on.
