It starts out fine.

Laura's been on edge throughout the entire siege, but she always is -- she's got six edges in particular that are more dangerous than others -- and so is everyone else, anyway. She doesn't eat or sleep much, it's just been a constant cycle of fight, kill, run, fight, kill. It gets to her, eventually, strips away a layer of the humanity she's managed to acquire over the past three or four years. She dispatches most of the creatures she fights with a savagery like she's unraveling a little. But she's fine.

She's distracted in the middle of a fight with a pack of some kind of wolf-things; they've almost cleared them out but there's three of them on her at once and they're taking up all her attention. They're quick, quicker than she had counted on, or else she'd be done with them by now. Their teeth are razor-sharp and secrete a poison that will slow her down if they bite her, so she's trying not to let them bite her. She doesn't have time to pay attention to the small robot hovering over their location; Steph has ranged weapons, she'll take care of it.

Except it doesn't attack. It drops something, a small vial that smashes on the sidewalk. Laura ignores it; it's probably a biological weapon of some kind, but it shouldn't be able to affect her with her healing factor. Her priority is killing these things so they can evacuate the area --

Laura stops in her tracks. Her head tips up. She inhales.

Steph is starting to worry, it's like watching Laura unravel, as she gets more violent and more reckless with every fight. It doesn't matter that Laura can't be permanently hurt, Steph is more concerned about whether Laura will be able to come back from this; even though Steph isn't entirely sure what this is. All Steph knows is that she wants to spend as much time with Laura as possible, as if maybe having someone with her might help. It means that Steph is with her when they encounter the wolves, although unlike Laura, Steph has to keep her distance. She's found a low level balcony to pull herself up to and she's shooting at the wolves from there.

She doesn't get the bot in time, only managing to destroy it with a batarang after its dropped the vial. Laura's senses are better than hers, but Steph takes care of the last wolves before she looks down at Laura, "What is it?"

Kiden would say that she's been sitting up on this roof watching Laura and Steph rip shit apart, but it's been more like she's been sitting here watching Laura and Steph frozen in the middle of ripping shit apart. Not as fun as the former, but the latter keeps Kiden safe.

For a moment, anyway, because she yanks herself out of her safety zone to run down the fire escape and join her friends on street level to convince them to run away with her. She's just a few feet away from Laura when Kiden notices her acting weird. Weirder than usual, that is.

"Laura?"

To say Tatiana is tired would be an understatement. She rests when she can, but she feels bad going too long; maybe that doesn't make sense, but none of this does.

She doesn't expect to run into them, and at first she's delighted; a wide grin lights her grimy, battered features as she runs forward, almost heedless of the monsters.

Then her gaze catches on the broken vial, and snaps to Laura, still and strange.

"Oh, no." It's a hoarse whisper as she stumbles to a stop.

It happens almost instantaneously. One second she's standing there with the blankest look on her face she has ever had -- and for Laura, that's saying quite a bit -- and then she's whirling around and aiming to drive her clawed fist into Kiden's head. Her eyes red and bloodshot, her face twisted into a snarl of rage, there is absolutely no recognition there and nothing whatsoever left of her humanity. In that second, she is all primal rage. She screams once and it sounds like something that could only come from an animal.

She doesn't react as fast as she should. The change takes her completely by surprise, and there's a split second of her brain trying to process what the hell just happened before she responds. She barely even had time to register that Tatiana is here.

"Move!" It's shouted at Kiden as Steph dives at Laura, hoping to tackle her to the ground before she can reach the other girl. If she'd given this plan any actual thought, she'd realize it would probably end badly for her, but she doesn't really consider that possibility, the most important thing right now is that those claws don't reach Kiden's face.
