At some point during the week, Sebastian posted a brief notice up on the staff bulletin board:

Autumn Dinner
Sunday Evening. Dining Hall. Potluck. BYOB.

When Sunday rolls around, Sebastian has brought along a tray of fruit, cheese, some preserves, and fresh bread.

Mabel's smile gets a little more genuine. "I may just take you up on that one of these days. Don't worry, I'll get over it. Comes with the job, I guess. There's been worse horror stories."

"What do you think, Liesl?" Sol inquires, giving Mabel a briefly cock-eyed look. "Does the Corbarian make a good mascot?"

Four year olds shouldn't be that good at looking at adults like they're stupid. "Duh."

"Your cousins are a bad influence," he reflects, with a brief pang for Dotty.

"Indeed I am. And Sir Integra wants me to go with a partner." Not a direct proposition, but really it's pretty close. Brie didn't have extremely high hopes though, she had only just met the man.

"I've been watching a few, but Sir Integra generally believes in the partner system." Not that he doesn't - too many years of war to feel very comfortable in exploratory capacities without at least one person for backup.

"Isn't that the truth. I've a few hounds, and my father 'gave' me one when I was about her age, but in truth, about all I did was proudly claim the thing was mine whenever anyone would listen." He smiles. "She seems to be settling in, though."

"Oh really." Brie was happy to know that she hadn't been singled out as needing a partner.

She hesitated before asking, "So I take it you currently don't have one?" Maybe that's what he meant by "watching a few."

"Not officially, yet." He'd been cautious; he's not technically a field agent, and innovating warding techniques is interesting in and of itself.

That said, violent possession was nothing to be ignored, even amidst all the other activity in the city. It had caught his attention.

She nodded in response. Clearly Lucius didn't want to commit to anything quite so soon. She understood. Is she were a bit more rational at the moment, she'd probably have the same response.

To be honest, all of the open cases fascinated her. Not in the scientist way really - but rather, she was interested in knowing who was behind these things.

"It seems that a few of the cases are very well-staffed. I'm especially interested in the disappearance or the violent possession cases."

"The possession has me worried," he confesses. "There are several possibilities, and none of them are very heartening." Which is to say yes, that's the one he's been mainly watching.

"All right, then." He smiles again, pleased to see her recovered spirit (so to speak). He doesn't quite reach out to chuck her under the chin, but he does consider it for a moment.

"So, while you're here..." Hellboy reaches over to the fruit-and-cheese tray, scoops up a couple chunks of each, and quickly scarfs them down. "I got this case I'm working on. Shoggoths, or things that try to act like 'em: you ever run into anything like that before?"

"Which possibilities are you considering?" she asked.

"From personal experience, I know there are a few powerful vampire disciplines that would allow for this type of repossession. Though I'm sure other supernatural creatures might have similar powers."

"A clever wizard could make a person appear possessed," he concurred. "Or a capricious faerie could cause a similar reaction. But without knowing more, it's difficult to theorize in any meaningful way."

She nodded along. A fae from her world would have no trouble at all creating violent possessions.

"Tell you what. Why don't you and I poke around this topic. Try to get some leads. Perhaps work together on a trial basis?"

"I would be amenable," he says, after considering it for a moment. "If you're interested."

It is something a bit outside what he's comfortable with, but the challenge intrigues him, if he's honest.
