Dean remembers what it was like when he and Sammy got pulled out of their own life and dumped into the last place. How in-over-his-head he felt, how hard it was to adjust. He's not the best at offering reassurance ever but he feels like he ought to try.

Places like these, they aren't places where you see a lot of people smiling like this. Not often and if you somehow manage to hang onto it the place might try to batter it out of you. He'd hate to see that.
