Barbara hasn't been to Mafaton yet; she wanted to learn a bit more about it, picking pieces of truth from whispers and rumours. She's met a few tenants first hand; a human couple and a skittish xenian girl. (Barbara could hardly blame her for being wary; she'd stayed with her, on the way home.)

From what she's gathered, it's not much more dangerous than the rest of Baedal, and if she really wants to see it alive, she ought to come after the sun goes down.

She turns into the first street with more curiosity than apprehension. People are people, after all, and she's certainly encountered her share of those with unique abilities.
