There is a pregnant pause, yes, but it simply does not take that long for him to think through anything, even so delicate a subject as putting his relationship with Magneto into words. It's not that he's trying to spare Erik anything, really; it's only that these are his feelings, thank you, and therefore none of the other man's business.
