"Lots of things--" and that's even a smile, there, even if it doesn't last long at all. It stands out, in its briefness, the kind of smile that inspires patronizingly well-meaning older gentlemen to tell her that she'd be prettier if she did that more often. (She remembers saying once she was trying to appeal to a different crowd and then her father suddenly remembered somebody he wanted to introduce her to on the other side of the room.)
