He sounds surprised -- he's reluctantly come to the conclusion that that must have happened to him (he's too clever to entirely discount Occam's razor for the sake of his own mental health -- too clever, then, definitely, yeah) but remembers nothing of it, and that bothers him. It must be worse, to be yanked out of the city and pulled back in and remember the whole thing. That sense of helplessness instead of blissful ignorance.
